SHELLSSH GUIDE

From install to
your first SSH session.

A practical introduction to setting up a server, authenticating securely, using the terminal and transferring files with SFTP.

QUICK START

Connect in a few focused steps.

01

Add a server

Create a profile with a hostname or IP, SSH port, username and authentication method.

02

Choose authentication

Use a password, an ED25519/RSA private key, or keyboard-interactive authentication when required.

03

Verify the host

Review the host-key fingerprint for new servers. Strict checking helps detect unexpected identity changes.

04

Open the terminal

Launch the host and work in the SSH terminal. Create additional sessions for parallel shells.

05

Use SFTP

Browse remote paths, upload or download files, create folders and use supported file operations.

06

Organize your fleet

Pin important servers, add tags and use server status information to find hosts quickly.

SSH KEYS

Use key-based authentication.

ShellSSH can manage ED25519 and RSA identities. Generate a key, protect it with a passphrase when appropriate, copy the public key in OpenSSH format and add it to the server's ~/.ssh/authorized_keys.

# Example authorized_keys entryssh-ed25519 AAAA... your-device
SFTP

Work with remote files.

Open the SFTP workspace from a saved host. Navigate directories, upload local files, download remote items and use supported rename, folder creation and deletion operations.

SECURITY

Know what you are trusting.

Keep strict host-key verification enabled for servers you control. If a known server unexpectedly presents a new fingerprint, verify the change through an independent channel before accepting it.

TERMINAL TIPS

Make the terminal fit your workflow.

Multiple sessionsKeep separate shells open when troubleshooting or comparing hosts.
SearchFind command output quickly in terminal scrollback.
Quick keysUse the accessory row for common shell control keys and symbols.
ThemesChoose a palette and font size that stays readable during long sessions.
